Privacy notice

Last updated 6 October 2026.

Who we are

DisOwed is a programme to build commons that Nigerian communities own. The DisOwed Trust is being registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission; until it is, the DisOwed founders are responsible for your details. Contact us at hello@disowed.com.

What we collect

  • Add your name: your name, town or country, email, which description fits you, whether you want your name shown, and any pledge amount and currency.
  • Nominate a community or partner with us: your name, email, optional phone number and organisation, and what you tell us in the form.
  • Abuse protection: a one-way scrambled code made from your internet address, used only to limit how many forms one connection can send in an hour. We never store the address itself.

Why, and on what basis

We use your details only to count and show support for DisOwed, to write to you about your pledge when the pilot opens, and to reply to your nomination or enquiry. The legal basis is your consent, under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 and, for people in the United Kingdom or European Union, the GDPR. We never sell or share your details for marketing.

What is public

Only your name and town or country, and only if you ticked the box to be shown and we have checked the entry. Your email, role and pledge are never shown. The total number of supporters and pledge totals by currency are shown without names.

Where it is kept

The site is hosted by Vercel, the database by Neon (on Amazon Web Services in the eastern United States), and emails are sent by Resend. These companies process your details only on our instructions. Because they are in the United States, your details are transferred outside Nigeria, the UK and the EU, under those companies’ standard data-protection terms.

How long we keep it

  • Sign-ups never confirmed by email: deleted automatically after 30 days.
  • Confirmed supporters and pledges: until you remove them, or until DisOwed stops running.
  • Nominations and enquiries: as long as needed to reply and follow up, and no longer than two years.

Your rights

You can see, correct or delete your details, or withdraw consent, at any time. Every email we send has a link to delete your details at once; or write to hello@disowed.com. If you are unhappy with how we handle your details, you can complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, or in the UK to the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Cookies

The public site sets no cookies and uses no tracking or analytics. The only cookie is a sign-in cookie on the team’s private admin page.
